About the PDF Page Numbers
A long PDF without page numbers is hard to discuss in a meeting or to cite in an email, and printed copies are easy to shuffle out of order. This tool writes a number onto every page in the position and style you pick. You can start counting from any number and include the total page count, which helps when a document is an appendix or the second part of a larger file.
What you can do
- Place numbers at the top or bottom of the page, aligned left, centre or right.
- Choose a format: 1, 2, 3; 1 / 10; Page 1; or Page 1 of 10.
- Set the first number, from 0 upwards, so numbering can continue from another document.
- Adjust the font size between 6 and 36 points and pick any text colour.
- The whole document is numbered in one pass, whether it has three pages or three hundred.
When it works best
- Numbering a merged PDF of reports, scans or slides before sending it for review.
- Preparing court bundles, theses or tender documents that must have numbered pages.
- Continuing the numbering of an appendix so it starts at, for example, page 41.
- Adding "Page X of Y" to meeting packs so people can see quickly whether a printout is complete.
Things to know
- Every page is numbered, including the cover. To leave the cover out, remove it with Delete PDF Pages, number the rest, and merge the cover back.
- The number is placed close to the page edge and is not checked against existing content, so it can overlap a footer that sits in the same spot. Try another position if it does.
- In the "of 10" formats, the total is the real number of pages in the file, even if you start counting from a different number.
- Numbers are drawn in Helvetica in your browser; the file is not uploaded.
- Text you add in the format, such as the word "Page", is drawn in the same font and colour as the number.
