About the Word to PDF

A Word file can look different on every computer, depending on the fonts and version installed, and anyone can edit it. Converting to PDF fixes the layout so it prints and displays the same everywhere. This tool runs your document through LibreOffice on our server, which handles both modern .docx and older .doc files, and returns a PDF.

What you can do

• Convert .docx documents from Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice into PDF.
• Convert legacy .doc files saved by older versions of Word.
• Keep headers, footers, page numbers, tables and images in the same place as the document.
• Download the PDF named after your original file, with "-converted" added.
• Hyperlinks in the document stay clickable in the PDF.

When it works best

• Sending a CV, cover letter or proposal that must look exactly as you designed it.
• Submitting coursework or forms to a portal that only accepts PDF.
• Converting a document on a phone or shared computer without Word installed.
• Locking down a letter or report so recipients see it without accidental edits.

Things to know

• If the document uses a font that is not installed on the server, LibreOffice substitutes a similar one, which can change line breaks slightly. Standard fonts like Arial and Times New Roman convert reliably.
• Macros and form controls are not run; the PDF shows the document as it is laid out on the page.
• Password-protected Word files cannot be converted.
• Word files can be up to 25 MB. Your document is converted and discarded, and the PDF is removed from our server within about 30 minutes, whether or not you download it.
